The Bugatti Royale Coupe Napoleon at the Saint-Cloud Elegance Competition

It is by road that the famous coupe Napoleon, Ettore Bugatti’s personal car, will make its entrance at the Saint-Cloud Elegance Competition. The coupe Napoleon is one of the seven Bugatti Royale chassis built between 1926 and 1933 and incontestably the most exclusive car in the world. Admiring its lines is a pleasure and seeing it in motion, a privilege. The coupe Napoleon will arrive in Paris the day before the Saint-Cloud Elegance Competition opens and will certainly be the crowning glory of the event. The Cité de l’Automobile (Musée National, Collection Schlumpf - www.collection-schlumpf.com) which owns the coupe Napoleon, thus joins the ranks of partners of the Saint-Cloud Elegance Competition

Artcurial, which has backed the Saint-Cloud Elegance Competition from the outset, will of course welcome the coupe Napoleon when it graces Paris with its presence. Pending this event, the teams at the prestigious auction house are pleased to announce the first cars registered in the day’s sale scheduled during the Saint-Cloud Elegance Competition: a 1958 Pegaso Z102 Touring, Bugatti Type 40 roadster with compressor, a 1934 2-seater Alfa Romeo A6C 2300 Spider, a 1913 Brasier 15hp limousine, an original saloon in perfect condition, and a first hand Delage DM with bodywork by Autobineau. The tradition of the great automobile elegance competitions of last century will be revived at the gates of Paris.
Held on 28th and 29th June 2008 by Editions LVA, the first Saint-Cloud Elegance Competition will be one of the key events this summer. The prestigious and historic setting of the Saint-Cloud park will host exhibitions, condition competitions and special events. Expert collectors and well-informed motor and elegance enthusiasts will be more than satisfied. Auctions of automobilia and cars, masterfully orchestrated by Hervé Poulain (Artcurial, Briest-Poulain-F.Tajan), will undoubtedly be the highlights of this weekend.

The Bugatti Royales

The Bugatti Royale is a “car designed for kings but that kings would never buy”. Masterminded by Ettore Bugatti, it was intended to be the car for the world’s rich and famous but failed to enjoy the expected success. Only 7 chassis were completed between 1926 and 1933 (fitted over time with 11 different bodies) and only three were sold new. The remaining four were used by Ettore Bugatti, whose famous coupe Napoleon had its bodywork completed by his son, Jean Bugatti. A commercial failure, the Royale nonetheless marked an era and today remains one of the most beautiful and exclusive cars in the world. Do not miss the auction organised at the Saint-Cloud Great Elegance Competition. It will be a major event, orchestrated by one of the most famous French auctioneers: Maître Hervé Poulain, of Artcurial.
The auction will be held opposite the Great Waterfall as of 6 p.m. (bidders welcomed as of 5 p.m.) on Saturday 28^th June.

The great Lorraine waterfall

Did you know that one of the two cars on the poster, the blue n°6 in the top left-hand corner of this web page, is no other but the Lorraine-Dietrich which won the 24 Hour Le Mans race in 1926, driven by Bloch & Rossignol?

The Lorraine-Dietrich club, which organised the last Rally of disappeared makes, does us the honour of bringing this historic car to the great Saint Cloud elegance competition in late June.

To organise this event, the whole LVA team is involved.

At its head is our CEO, Alain GEORGES accompanied by Nicolas Batifoulier, Sales director. They will supervise the events making up this weekend.

Christophe Richy, our events specialist, will be in charge of logistics in the field. The three editors in chief of the group’s automobile magazines, Didier Lainé (Rétroviseur) who still remembers Auto Rétro Festival which he organised in the same location in the eighties, Bruno Leroux (La Vie de l’Auto) and Xavier Audiau (Auto Rétro), will run the elegance and condition competitions.

Etienne Ripet (assistant editor in chief of LVA) will coordinate our website, Claude Bohère (LVA editor) our unbeatable specialist - at least in all things related to the automobile and its history - will be specifically in charge of our condition competition, Hugues Chaussin and Philippe Gutiérrez (LVA editors) will handle relations with the clubs, José Pereira (LVA technical editor) is preparing the repair stand. Thibaut Amant will participate in setting up the various competitions.

The subeditors, Carole Llombart and Alexa Pougeux and their assistants, Sarah Da Cruz and Shirley Penas, will answer the phone and guide you towards the right contact person. The sales team, made up of Naziha Laroussi, assisted by Hélène Douphy, will answer clubs’ and professionals’ space buying requests. Maureen Richy will be in charge of coordinating the whole team.

Of the many activities organised this weekend, the elegance competitions will be the highlights. Entries will be accepted by our selection committee who will surely have great difficult in selecting only 35 vehicles per competition…

The different categories have already been determined:

1935-40: Modern times trophy
1946-1950: New Look trophy
1951-55: Nationale 7 trophy

We remind you that registrations will be accepted as of early March until 30^th April. You therefore have enough time to take good photos of your vehicle, which may help for its selection…

1st registered club : Club de l’auto

The first club to commit to taking a stand at the Saint Cloud elegance competition in late June is the Club de l’auto, the organiser of the Paris-Deauville for the past 40 years! Open to pre-war cars (and pre-1965 coupés and convertibles), this club includes several beautiful French and foreign classics, with bodywork designed by the great fashion designers: Delage, Talbot, Packard, Stutz, Rolls-Royce… The Saint-Cloud park will fit them like a glove.
